Matt Wilson & Band Headline

Spicewood Arts Society Aug. 7 Fundraiser

High energy concert benefits arts in area schools

SPICEWOOD, TX (July 20, 2010) – High-energy pianist Matt Wilson and the Wilson Band headline a Spicewood Arts Society fundraiser at 7 p.m, Saturday, Aug. 7, at the Spicewood Vineyards Event Center (1419 Burnet CR 409), about 35 miles from Downtown Austin. They will play songs from The Great American Rock ‘n’ Roll Songbook.

Net proceeds from this fundraiser will be used to establish four scholarships to promote the performing, visual and literary arts in the area,” said Janey Richardson, President of the Society, now in its 10th year.

Admission for the event is $75. Tickets can be purchased at or 830-264-2820. For tickets, more information or a map, go to www.spicewoodarts.org. There will be complementary hors d’oeuvres from the Grille at Rough Hollow, sweets from Bozilla Cakes and, for purchase, a great selection of Spicewood Vineyard wines.

Wilson and his band typically have audience members on their feet, clapping, dancing and singing along to a wide array of captivating musical styles, from Ray Charles’ “What’d I Say” to Billy Joel’s “You’re Always a Woman to Me,” as well as some of his own original songs. Cabaret seating at the event will allow plenty of dancing space.

The artist released his 4th CD, titled “Matt Wilson,” in February 2010. He has played every kind of concert venue, from a Broadway theater in New York City to a packed and rocking Sixth Street location in Austin..

For two years Matt wowed sold-out audiences as the “Piano Man” in the First National Tour of the Billy Joel/Twyla Tharp musical “Movin’ Out.” In 2007, he completed his own theatrical multimedia tribute to the great rock ‘n’ roll piano players.

Wilson grew up in a musical family, singing and playing in the church his father pastored and idolizing Billy Joel and Lyle Lovett. He played five nights a week at the Jellyrolls piano bar at Disney World in Orlando while in college, guest-starred in the Carolina Opry and has been featured in major musical productions.

He took the stage for the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia, and has opened for Hall & Oates, Little River Band and others. The Texas State Senate has honored him with a resolution for achievement in the area of fine arts.

According to one long-time Wilson-watcher, “He never fails to elicit excitement from his audience, and he does so with intelligence and verve. His renditions songwriting are catchy without being pandering... infused with a degree of depth not to be expected in most of the pop world.”
